This Week’s Topic: Animal Sidekicks

Hedwig (Harry Potter Series)

Owls are so near and dear to my heart. Hedwig the Snowy Owl was one of the best parts of the Harry Potter series!

The Cats in the ‘Warriors‘ series

This is not exactly a ‘sidekick’ selection, as this series centers around a world of feral felines. I absolutely love their adventures!

Stella, Bob & Ruby in ‘The One and Only Ivan

There are such adorable creatures in ‘The One and Only Ivan’! The story is quite an eye-opening experience.

Who are your favorite bookish animal sidekicks? Feel free to share!

This Week’s Topic: Disappointing Books

It’s difficult for me to feel let down by a book, but here are a few that weren’t for me:

Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty

While I was drawn in with the ‘health retreat with a twist’ plot point, the lives of most of the participants didn’t completely hold my interest.

Meddling Kids by Edgar Cantero

I loved the idea of the group taking on an adventure as adults, but once I got past the ‘Scooby Gang’ nostalgia, I just couldn’t get into it!

This Week’s Theme: Middle Grade Covers

Here are some Middle Grade covers that I enjoy:

The Whispers by Greg Howard

Witnessing the connection between a child and his pet is so heartwarming. The etheral glow in the forest is equally stunning. Along with the lovely plot, these factors made me pick up ‘The Whispers’ a couple months ago!

Nightbird by Alice Hoffman

I read this story a few years ago and fell absolutely in love with it! A young girl discovers friendship and trust after her mother returns to the quite community of her youth, in order to protect her family’s secret.

City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab

I enjoy the black/white/red color scheme of Victoria Schwab’s Cassidy Blake series! I’m eagerly anticipating the third installment of Cassidy’s story (it’s supposed to come out in October…hopefully this still holds true)!

What are some Middle Grade book covers that you love? Let me know in the comments!

This Week’s Prompt: First Lines

Once upon a time, this guy Newton said, “What goes up must come down.”
I can’t stand him.

This Book Is:

Honeybees and Frenemies by Kristi Wientge

It’s the summer before eighth grade and Flor is stuck at home and working at her family’s mattress store, while her best friend goes off to band camp (probably to make new friends). It becomes even worse when she’s asked to compete in the local honey pageant. This means Flor has to spend the summer practicing her talent (recorder) and volunteering (helping a recluse bee-keeper) with Candice, her former friend who’s still bitter about losing the pageant crown to Flor when they were in second grade. And she can’t say no.

Then there’s the possibility that Flor and her family are leaving to move in with her mom’s family in New Jersey. And with how much her mom and dad have been fighting lately, is it possible that her dad may not join them? Flor can’t let that happen. She has a lot of work to do.

I hope everyone has a wonderful Friday!
